Competing for exposure in the sea of 2015 Christmas music is the Christian band MercyMe’s albumMercyMe It’s Christmas!Although none of the 11 tracks are new songs in the true sense, the offering has a good balance of traditional sacred Christmas music and secular favorites. MercyMe puts its stamp on them with lead singer Bart Millard’s signature voice.
Three particular songs showcase the different genres on this album. “Christmastime Again” begs the listener to get out the black shoes and white socks and dance to its 1950s or 60s feel, while “A Holly Jolly Christmas” features the elegant swing style. “Our Lullaby” has a country flavor; bring on the cowboy boots.
MercyMe’s second Christmas project honors the Christmas music tradition without being boring and predictable. (Fair Trade)
