Tending God’s Creation

By unnecessarily adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, we are disregarding the survival of other species and the welfare of future generations.

After creating Adam, God placed him in a garden. The garden would feed Adam, and in return Adam was to take care of it (Gen. 2:15). How are we taking care of the places where we live?

In our interconnected world, actions we take now affect not only our own backyards, farms, and cities, but also distant places and peoples extending centuries into the future. An important example of this interconnectedness is greenhouse gases, which are like a global thermostat, trapping heat in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases emitted anywhere travel around the world within weeks and might remain in the air for many decades, increasingly affecting everyone.

We’re starting to see damaging effects from increasing greenhouse gas concentrations—increasingly severe heat waves, storms, floods, and wildfires. Almost two-thirds of Americans now agree that climate change is either a crisis or a serious problem, with a majority wanting immediate action. Yet many others, inside and outside the church, deny the urgency of this problem. They wonder: given the huge temperature swings from summer to winter, day to night, do a few degrees really matter? They ask: would a good God allow a global climate catastrophe to unfold?

These are fair questions. But they have answers.

Do a few degrees of warming really matter?

Let’s address this question with relevant information from climate.nasa.gov. According to ice core data, in the 12,000 years since the last ice age, the earth’s average temperature has changed only slightly from century to century. In the past 50 years, however, temperatures have increased by 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit), and at a rate at least 10 times faster than after any earlier glacial period. It is no coincidence that temperatures are increasing at the same time as greenhouse gas levels. Scientists have calculated that the odds of “natural variability” being the major cause of our rising temperatures are now less than one in 20. Living by this assumption is clearly a foolish gamble.   

There are two things to keep in mind about the temperature change we’ve seen so far: its unevenness and its speed. While a change of 1 degree Celsius sounds almost imperceptible, this is a global average. Almost all land areas have warmed more than this, and temperatures have been increasing dramatically nearer the poles. Some areas of the Arctic have already warmed by 15 degrees Fahrenheit (National Geographic, Nov. 2015, p.16). A Dartmouth expert on ice melt has described Greenland’s current melting rate as a herd of 2,000 elephants entering the ocean every second. Multiple scientific studies predict that if global average temperatures increase by another degree or two, the melting of Greenland’s ice sheet will become unstoppable, sending us down a path where sea level will rise by 23 feet over the next few centuries. We might already be halfway down the road to causing this slow-motion disaster.

The speed of change also matters. In a warming climate, plants and animals migrate toward the poles or to higher altitudes to stay at similar temperatures. Entire ecosystems must travel together to survive, so the speed at which successful migration can occur is quite slow. As reported by Elizabeth Kolbert in The Sixth Extinction, if our rapid rise in temperature continues for another few degrees, a mass extinction is likely. Up to one-third of God’s species might be gone, including many associated with mountaintops (redwoods, pikas), polar regions (polar bears, ringed seals, penguins), and coral reefs. All of us who worship God as creator should work together to prevent such a loss.

Would God allow this to happen?

God is good, all the time. Would God allow our coastal cities to be lost to the ocean, or so many of his creatures to vanish? We can all affirm that God is active in restraining evil as he works out his purposes of salvation. A normative way that God restrains evil, however, is by allowing us to experience the damage and brokenness caused by our actions so that we will turn to him in repentance. Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son illustrates this. The son’s dissolute lifestyle and rejection of his father landed him in dire poverty. If his father or anyone else had shielded him from the consequences of his actions, the son would not have been driven by hunger to return home, and he would never have experienced the intensity of his father’s love expressed in the joyous welcome and restoration the son received upon arrival.

But isn’t God in charge of climate? Indeed he is, but he loves humankind so much that when we mess up, he sends us wake-up calls and makes us deal with the consequences. Great parenting! In the 1980s, the protective ozone layer was depleted by refrigerant chemicals, and we had to fix it. Now the U.S., with 5% of the world’s population, is using 25% of its resources. By unnecessarily adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, we are disregarding the survival of other species and the welfare of future generations. This is evil, another aspect of our damaging fallenness. Our climate is breaking down, and we are the cause. How will we respond?

The church should know the correct way to respond. Let others try to shift blame, justify inaction, or jockey for advantage in the chaos. We know that even though God is in control, he prefers to work through his people. We therefore must abandon all our sinful ways and, like the prodigal son, decide to return home. This is the only road to renewal and restoration. We pray:

Father, thank you for our exquisitely beautiful home, its amazing diversity of plants and animals, and your provision for every living thing. We confess that we have not taken adequate care of your creation. We have lived large instead of simply, used far more than was necessary, and have sought luxury instead of you. You’ve called us to care for “the least,” as you do, but instead we have placed our wants front and center and left little for the poor or for future generations to work with. Father, forgive us! Help us to reorder our lives, reflecting your love and care for others and for all parts of your good creation. Through the Holy Spirit, heal us and our land. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The prodigal son didn’t make it all the way home before his joyful father ran out to meet him. God can use our small steps toward faithful living to accomplish something big—in our hearts, in our churches, and in our world. 

What would reordered lives look like?

You will need to envision this for yourself, guided by the Spirit. Here’s what we envision:

  • Practice the spiritual disciplines of simplicity and generosity.
  • Focus on relationships rather than possessions.
  • Support leaders who will courageously address climate change.
  • Rapidly reduce our carbon footprint—the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted by our activities and our purchases—by enacting many small and large changes in how we live, work, and travel.
  • Downsize, consume less, waste less, and love more.

I find it sad the authors of this article suggest who to vote for based on courage to address climate change. Indeed it requires more courage to question man made global warming in todays political climate of environmental fascisism. 

Here are a few points that would be nice if the authors could address:  

  • Water Vapor constitutes 36-70% of greenhouse gasses. Carbon Dioxide is 9-26%, Methane is 4-9% and Ozone 3-7% (concentrations vary).


CO2 is naturally occurring with 37,400 G Tons stored in the ocean, 2-3000 G tons stored in the biomass(plants) and 720 G tons in the atmosphere. Every year the Oceans exhale 332 G Tons, inhale 338 G tons; biomass gives out up to 439 G tons and absorbs 450 G tons. Industry and land use are estimated to emit 29 G tons (that is the highest estimate, others say only 6 G tons).


The amount of CO2 absorbed or emitted is affected by temperature and sunshine etc.

  •  The center of the earth is recently estimated at 6000 degrees C temperature (revised recently from 5000 degrees; of significance is there is no way to measure it accurately). The thermal mass of the earth is 136 million times that of the atmosphere. If heat were transferring from core to atmosphere, the atmosphere warmed by 4 degrees would be offset by the core cooling 4/136 millionth of a degree: that is not detectable.


  • Molten rock circulating beneath earth’s surface is attributed as what causes the magnetic poles. The magnetic poles are shifting with accelerating speed.  It was noted around 2019, that  the traditional movement of the pole has accelerated from 9km per year to 41km per year.  This acceleration of magnetic pole movement would seem to indicate molten rock flow is changing.


(there is a lot more to this, with fluid dynamics affected by the earth spinning at 1000mph surface speed and rotating around the sun at 67,000mph, and the crust is only 25 miles deep, thicker viscous rock is 50-200 miles deep, and the planet is 7926 miles in diameter. We are on a globe of molten rock spinning thru space with only a thin crust.)


  • It is apparent to anyone familiar with liquid heat exchangers, that modifying the fluid flow will affect the rate of heat transfer. That is one reason why we stir coffee; to cool it. Shifting magnetic poles indicate the center of the earth is stirring at a different rate, one may conclude that he atmosphere would have to change.


The small comparative quantity of manmade CO2, less than naturally occurring variances of emissions, combined with the energy density of sunlight is less than other potential sources of heat rise on earths surfaces.  If the earth is changing temperature, this seems more likely as energy transfer from the core, than man made CO2 which is less than naturally occurring variances.

Before we cancel western society that has done much to extend lifetimes, extend religious freedoms and extend liberty, it would be nice if the authors could ensure we are not solving the wrong problem. 

In our article, we wrote “Scientists have calculated that the odds of ‘natural variability’ being the major cause of our rising temperatures are now less than one in 20. Living by this assumption is clearly a foolish gamble.”  This natural variability already includes all the factors Gary Braaksma describes in his comment, plus a whole lot more – water vapor, the carbon cycle, the solar cycle, the core of the earth.  There is a strong scientific consensus that none of these factors can explain why the climate is changing.  This is why we call for followers of Jesus Christ to reduce their carbon footprint – it is the easiest, cheapest, and fairest way to protect God’s creation and love our neighbor by slowing down the damage from climate change. 


In our article, we also wrote “The church should know the correct way to respond. Let others try to shift blame, justify inaction, or jockey for advantage in the chaos.”  Repentance is difficult!



It is not my intent to questions someone’s faith or repentance but only to share observations that have been neglected in discussion of global warming.  Nor is my response in support of flagrant disregard for the environment and Gods resources.  But the consequences of choosing rote the path of reducing fossil fuel use are not to be understated.


From the authors’ response and reference to the original article one is to gather that:

  • Global warming is real, with less than one in 20 odds of natural origins,
  • People have to pay slightly more to eliminate the effects of global warming,
  • The church is telling us what to believe regarding science with implications that repentance is difficult, and
  • The church is telling us how to vote.


There are problems with each of these assertions:


The discovery of earths accelerating magnetic poles is a recent discover (2019) and the adjusted earth core temperature is also recent (2013). These discoveries were made after the statistical compilation of 1 in 20 odds statement, yet with fresh information available the odds have not been updated. Anyone familiar with heat transfer from liquids would understand how such discoveries MUST affect earths surface temperature, consistent with other findings that earths temperature has been fluctuating for many eons before man’s contribution.  But without a battery of science or experiments to investigate this possible cause, global warming proponents continue to say we are doomed without costly intervention. 


A friend told me in 1997, in gravest sincerity that the earth only had 20 years left at the most. In 2005, Time Magazine portrayed the imminent doom of the planet if drastic action were not taken immediately.  Dixie Lee Ray was speaking in opposition of global warming theory in the early 1990’s.  Many global warming deadlines have come and gone, yet the predictions including the 1 in 20 odds statement are not revised.


To discount the so-called mitigation as “easiest, cheapest, and fairest way to protect God’s creation and love our neighbor”; indicates a misunderstanding of what is being proposed.  For example, the cost to mitigate carbon emissions has been estimated at $500T by some (119 years’ worth of the entire USA federal budget).  That contrasts with a recent UN study that estimated the cost of ignoring worst case estimated global warming as a 10% decrease in growth of GDP over 80 years, barely discernable.  These costs are not theoretical, already a modest home price is increased by $30k because gas furnaces are not allowed. Without fossil fuels, farming will be decimated, not just the cost of food, but the supply will be threatened.


But a greater toll than monetary considerations, is the environmental damage caused by solar or wind farms; unreliable in providing necessary energy, ruining the land beneath for other purposes, and guaranteed to only make their foreign owners wealthier (the majority of all wind farms are owned by seven consortiums).  Also greater than monetary consideration is the emotional toll this environmental hysteria is causing, reflected on young folks to famously avoid having families.  What happened to my sincerely worried friend? He became more and more concerned already 20 years ago about the imminent end of the world, and then perished in a suspicious collision; though it was not written up as suicide, there is an unrecognized toll for the negativity being preached about the end of the world to those who do not have faith in God.  And it should be noted by the authors; the proposed mitigation solutions put greater control of the population in centralized locations; this isn’t a conspiracy but simple observation.


I believe the church has a responsibility to demonstrate calm in these circumstances.  Leave the shrill worries for those without a foundation with the Creator. I regret that I didn’t say more calming observation to my perished friend, though I tried.  And certainly, the church should not be encouraging people to vote for candidates that believe humans are the center of the universe, which also overlap with candidates that are confusing genders, and think that abortion might be a civic duty, and label church goers as high-risk citizens.


Finally, even if God is given only “a chance of one” to control the climate, compared to 20 times the odds for man- made causes (which remains flawed analysis), you do not need to guess where I put my faith.
