Synod 2015 Approves New Banner Mandate

Image:

After heated discussion at Synod 2014 about articles printed in The Banner (the magazine of the Christian Reformed Church), this year’s synod approved a slightly changed mandate. Synod is the annual leadership meeting of the Christian Reformed Church.

The mandate was changed to more clearly specify the parameters of how the Banner editor exercises editorial judgment. Last year, Banner editor Rev. Bob De Moor apologized to synod for errors in editorial judgment.

De Moor is retiring from The Banner later this summer, and synod approved the process by which a search for a new editor will take place. It is expected that a nominee for the position will be presented to Synod 2016. Rev. Leonard Vander Zee will serve for a year as interim editor.

Synod 2015 also reaffirmed the right of the Banner editor to appeal to synod if a dispute arises between the editor and the CRC’s executive director over editorial content.

Synod 2015 is meeting at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, from June 12-18. For continuous Banner coverage, please follow The Banner Magazine on Facebook or @crcbanner on Twitter.
