Chiro, a young bat, has known only the comfort of his mother’s nearness. But one night she tells him that he must fly out into the world on his own. Chiro is afraid. How will he find his way in the darkness? His mother teaches him that “there are other ways to see, other ways to help you make your way in the world.” Chiro learns that he can rely on his sense, which is “the song you sing out into the world, and the song the world sings back to you.”

In this informative children’s picture book, young readers are introduced to bats, one of God’s unique creatures, and to a character whose loving parent helps him to overcome fears and to navigate an unfamiliar world. Ages 4 and up. (Simon & Schuster)
