The Back to God Hour’s Spanish ministry team traveled to Cartagena, Colombia, to participate in the Latin American Congress of Christian Communicators. During their visit they met people who listen to BTGH Spanish radio and TV programs and heard how the power of the gospel is transforming lives in this beautiful city. This is one story.

Luis and Eliana were young newlyweds dreaming of a brilliant future. They began their life together in Cartagena, a beautiful city with a rich history on the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

They dreamed of owning a jewelry store in the heart of the old walled city of Cartagena, known by many as “The Caribbean Jewel.” All their dreams came to a grinding halt when Luis was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The doctors said he had 12 months to live.

“Devastated and confused by this news, we had no other option than to spend all our savings seeking a cure, just as the sick woman did in Mark 5,” recalled Luis.

But one day they were listening to the radio and heard the preacher talking about suffering. Luis and Eliana decided to attend an evangelical church in their neighborhood.

“The church starting praying for us,” Eliana said. “We became sensitive to the leading of the Spirit. We started reading the Bible and listening to Christian programming on the radio. We even became brave enough to pray for ourselves.”

Luis and Eliana turned their lives and future over to God. Six years later, they own a small jewelry store in Cartagena. They have been blessed with a son, whom doctors said they would never be able to conceive. And for six years, Luis has been free from cancer.

As we left their jewelry store in the heart of the old walled city, we realized the impact radio has on the lives of people. In their testimony, God showed us a real jewel.
