Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church in Mason City, Iowa, hosted its second “Dog Days of Summer” outdoor worship service July 19, celebrating the good gift of pets.
The congregation hosts outdoor services once a month from June to October, rotating between the church property and a local park, said pastor Phil Boender. In this more casual setting some people even bring their dogs. The idea to have a “Dog Days” service came out of that.
“Dogs are loved companions in many families,” Boender said. “We want to celebrate the gift of pets in God’s good creation as a gift to us.” Both “Dog Days” services, the first having been five or six years ago, included a dog bulletin with descriptions of each of the attending pups, as well as a dog parade announced by professional broadcaster and church member Harry O’Neal.
Fifteen dogs and 108 people attended the 2026 service, which was also live-streamed to the sanctuary and online. As of the time of writing the video has had 755 views, significantly higher than the typical 30 to 35 views for regular Sunday service streams. Boender considers this viewership “a blessing” for the church’s “continuous effort in being missional.”
Among Rolling Acres' spiritual gifts, the pastor includes service, hospitality, and encouragement. “We are blessed as we bless others,” Boender said.
Rolling Acres next outdoor service, “Worship in the Park,” is scheduled for Aug. 23 with a gospel music quartet.
