Volunteers in Service, a connecting agency in Kent County, Mich., to mobilize congregational volunteers into community service where it’s needed, celebrates 40 years in 2026.
“It is very exciting to be celebrating God's faithfulness over the past 40 years as Volunteers In Service has continued to “empower Christians to join Christ's work in the community for the purpose of building God's kingdom,’” said VIS executive director Cori Scholtens, quoting the organization’s mission statement. “We are truly grateful for the men and women who followed God's call 40 years ago to launch Volunteers In Service as a support ministry for CRC deacons. We are spending this 40th year praising God as we look forward to all that is yet to come as we connect churches in Kent County with opportunities to witness his love through service in the community and equip church leaders as they mobilize their churches to serve.”
Scholtens said 40th anniversary celebration plans include highlighting the milestone in each of the organization’s monthly e-newsletters in 2026 (March featured the backstory of the original 1986 VIS logo); hosting a couple “Picnic in the Park” birthday parties this summer, and promoting 40 Days of Serving in Lent in February.
“It was very encouraging to hear from nine churches that were forwarding the resource to their deacons and families or using it as part of their Lenten worship series,” Scholtens said.
