Dirk Evans was known for his ability to listen. “While he was adept at talking,” said one of his sons, “I think his superpower was listening—with intent, seeking to understand—and not interrupting.” In his professional life Dirk served as a church pastor, hospital chaplain, certified supervisor of Clinical Pastoral Education, counselor, and frequent wedding officiant. These many roles led to or stemmed from strong connections with people from many walks of life. Dirk, 85, died June 10 after several years of living with Alzheimer’s disease. His kindness and love for others remained to the end.

Born in the Netherlands as Aalt Dirk van Sligtenhorst, Dirk immigrated to Ontario, Canada, with his family when he was 10 years old. In Canada he was met with a new language, a new culture, and worked hard to fit in, an experience that led him to be welcoming to others for the rest of his life.

A graduate of Calvin College (now University) and Seminary, Dirk was ordained in 1967. After three years of pastoring what was then Englewood (N.J.) Christian Reformed Church, he completed chaplaincy training and for the next 26 years served as a hospital chaplain and CPE supervisor in hospitals in Detroit and Toronto. He then pastored Immanuel CRC in Caledon, Ont., and CrossPoint CRC in Brampton, Ont. He retired in 2005, moving with his wife to Michigan to be closer to family.

Dirk’s hobbies included skiing—which he did into his 80s—woodworking, making cane chair seats, and gardening. He loved to paint and was also skilled in drywalling and carpentry—skills he used on numerous mission trips. Researching his family tree was another passion.

Dirk is survived by Elly, his wife of 62 years; three children; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
