The Evangelical Press Association and the Associated Church Press, two professional organizations for Christian publishing, had their annual conventions in May, distributing awards for work produced in 2024.
The Banner was recognized for TheBanner.org with an Award of Merit in the Denominational (Digital) category by the Evangelical Press Association.
The EPA also awarded recognition for the following articles and authors in specific categories:
- Article Series, Second Place, for Let’s Talk! by Todd Pheifer
- Biblical Exposition, Third Place, for Dust and the Divine, What Lent Can Teach Us About Caring for Creation by Kyle Meyaard-Schaap
- Humourous, Third Place, for Depression Screening, by Rod Hugen
- Editorial, Fourth Place, for Slippery Slope? by editor-in-chief Shiao Chong
- Student Writer of the Year, Fourth Place, for Peacemaking: Face to Face, by Madelyn Vander Meer (submitted as winner of The Banner’s 2024 Young Adults Writing Contest)
- Critical Review, Fifth Place, for Nourishing Narratives: The Power of Story to Shape Our Faith, by Mixed Media editor Lorilee Craker
- Devotional, Fifth Place, for Turning Over a New Leaf, What My House Plants Taught Me About Faith, by Lorilee Craker.
The Associated Church Press recognized TheBanner.org in the category of Publication Website, with an Award of Merit for Visual Communications.
The ACP also recognized Banner news editor Alissa Vernon with two Reporting & Writing awards: an Award of Excellence in Convention/Meeting Coverage (Magazine) for the coverage of Synod 2024; and an Award of Merit for Denominational Politics - Long Format for Synod 2024 in Our View: Resounding Words. The Synod 2024 reporting team included photographer Steven Herppich and writers Kristen Parker, Greg Chandler, and Grace Bueler.
