Zakaria Paliashvili: Georgian Sacred Chants for the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by Capitol Hill Chorale; Frederick Binkholder, director

Mixed Media

This disc features the text of the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom set to music by Zakaria Paliashvili (1871-1933). It is the first recording made to use Paliashvili’s original Georgian language—all previous recordings have been made in Church Slavonic. Paliashvili wrote the work for six- and sometimes even seven-part choir, and the 100-voice Capitol Hill Chorale meets both the linguistic and musical challenge. The other-worldly richness, language, and majesty of Orthodox liturgical singing melt together with heavenly results.
