Character Voice: A Bivocational Calling for Korean-American Pastor

Pastor Jae Duk (Jason) Lee is the pastor of Mercy Presbyterian Church, a Christian Reformed congregation in Gardena, Calif. He’s also a character voice actor for Korean language radio broadcasts. The missional-minded pastor believes God gave him a beautiful voice for kingdom work and that being a pastor working as a broadcaster represents Christ to the world.

Lee began the bivocational work directly after studies at Azusa Pacific University in 1993. Initially he did it for economic reasons but saw God’s hand in the provision and continued. He worked with Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) USA and also hosted programs with Christian radio and television productions in Los Angeles, including “Rest of Souls.” After many years working as a character voice actor, he’s now the director of character voices at Radio Korea Broadcasting Co. in Korean-town, Los Angeles.

Lee has dedicated his life to missional living and takes the apostle Paul’s missional life journey of truthful pastoral ministry as his example. He has preached and worked in Mexico and in missions to Native Americans. A deacon from One Love Korean Church in Guadalajara, Mexico, said: “I still remember your passionate message of Jesus Christ at our One Love Korean Church. . . . I love you, and will pray for your healthy life for his kingdom.”
