With rhyming text and vivid artwork, author Dominique Okonkwo and illustrator Sarah Ugolotti bring to life God’s truth as revealed in Romans 1:20—“For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature” (NLV).

When a mother takes her young son to the beach, she encourages him to “watch for God’s wonders. ... Gifts await us at the beach ahead.”

The boy is filled with joy and anticipation: “I leap from my shoes and dash onto the sand, / Bucket and shovel held tight in my hand. / I pause at the point where the sea cannot pass, / Where the seaweed lines up like a patch of green grass.” The boy doesn’t understand why the seaweed is surrounding his feet, so his mother explains the wonderful benefits of God’s creation of seaweed.

The boy notices many things: the waves that go so far on the beach and no farther, a hermit crab in a borrowed home, a sand dollar gift on the ocean floor, dazzling sunshine reflecting off waves, seagulls scavenging along the beach, and families loving and laughing together, enjoying God’s beautiful creation. The boy thinks, “From the sand to the sky, from the sea to the shore, / So much to explore on this beach we adore. / Creatures and creations formed by His hands, Only God holds the key to His master plans.”

In an endnote, author Dominique Okonkwo asks intriguing questions (and offers fascinating answers) to add insight to the storyline. For example, “Did you know seaweed is like an underwater superhero?” “Have you ever wondered why waves at the beach don’t continue flowing onto the land?” “Did you know hermit crabs are great recyclers?” “Did you know seagulls are known as nature’s clean-up crew?”

God of Wonders is a worshipful and joyful celebration of God’s creation, a book that will point children to God who created them and loves them and wants a relationship with them.
