In this second book in the Big Adventures for Growing Minds series—the first is God's Little Astronomer—author Tina Cho invites children to join a young oceanographer as he climbs into a submarine and takes a trip down, down, down beneath the waves to explore the wonders God made.
Cho interweaves scientific facts about the ocean’s saltiness, currents, tides, and different zones, as well as the myriad creatures that inhabit it—otters, dolphins, sharks, dumbo octopuses, spotted eagle rays, sea cucumbers, and more—with biblical truth about God’s love for the ocean world and the young readers who will enjoy her book. For example, she notes that just as God sees the creatures in the dark ocean depths, so he sees his children. And, just as God guides ocean creatures, he is always near his children and will never leave them.
Cho encourages children to embrace their role as ocean caregivers: “Little oceanographer, you have a big responsibility to care for the ocean God made and all that lives within. Your helpful actions can start a ripple of kindness.” Cho suggests steps children can take with the help of adults to accomplish this goal.
Illustrator Marta Alvarez Miguens’s intriguing, detailed illustrations and Cho’s worshipful, celebratory text will help children understand God’s majestic creation of oceans, their inhabitants, and his deep love for them: “Every seashell, turtle hatchling, dolphin, and crab is a reminder of our great and creative God. Yet you are His most wonderful and special creation.”
Recommended for children ages 3-7, God’s Little Oceanographer would make a good fit for a family’s devotional time. (WaterBrook)
