In this chapter book, suitable for middle school readers, teens, and adults, author Katy Morgan melds the biblical story about Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz with historically relevant facts and fictional narrative.

Morgan helps readers delve into Ruth’s questions, emotions, and experiences as she first encounters Naomi in the land of Moab, is later married to Naomi’s son Mahlon, who dies at a young age, and then journeys to Bethlehem with her grieving mother-in-law.

Raised in a culture where many gods are worshipped, Ruth catches glimpses of the God of Israel through the lives and stories of Naomi and her family. She initially has more questions than answers: “I didn’t understand this Israelite god. How could you worship only one? And how could he be kind? Gods showed favor to you if you gave them the right offerings, in theory. But really, they did what they wanted. So ... what did it mean for a god to be kind and loyal?”

As Ruth and Naomi find their way in Bethlehem, Ruth begins to understand that God is gracious and kind as he cares for her and Naomi through the generosity of Boaz, their kinsman redeemer.

In endnotes, Morgan writes, “In my retelling, I’ve added all sorts of details along the way. So, in this section, I’ve explained the thinking behind what I’ve written. This retelling is an attempt to bring the Bible story to life in a faithful and accurate way. But it’s only my version!”

A discussion guide for book clubs is included.
