Whether it's Olivia Lane’s beautiful, sweet voice or her raw, down-to-earth lyrics, this former self-stated atheist’s music invites the listener into her story. Lane’s Christian debut album Songs About Jesus (Deluxe Edition) is a delight and an encouragement. Her first radio single, “Woman at the Well,” describes the familiar Bible story and states in the chorus: “’Cause tonight I feel just like; The woman at the well; Wondering how someone could love me; When I can't love myself; But You want me as I am and that sounds crazy; I guess maybe that's why grace is so amazing.” Another gripping single, “Who I Thought You Were,” addresses the struggle of God’s people to grapple with legalistic tendencies. Lane talked about the song on her record label’s website: “For too long I had too many wrong preconceived notions of who God was,” she said. “Was he the judgmental God or the parental figure type who had all these rules with no explanation? I’m so glad when I got to finally know who God really was in 2018, he was none of those things.” Other strong selections include “God Shows Up,” a call to wait upon the Lord, and “God’s in It,” a touching ballad championing God’s providence in all things. Lane, who started in country music, definitely infuses a country feel to this effort, but listeners will also hear some soft pop. (BEC Recordings)
