Is there a place in your neighborhood where you and others go for solitude, to sit quietly with a grandchild, to meet a friend? The swing in this picture book is that place. It’s a classic two-swing structure set on a grassy knoll above an open seashore. The invitation is there for anyone who wanders down the path. “Come and stay awhile. Take a seat and swing out into the sky.”

And the wanderers do. This particular swing has enjoyed the company of children and couples, teens and the elderly. People have come alone or in groups, with picnics and pets. The swing has been a place of beginnings and endings, love found and love lost, joy and sadness. Generations have passed through the swing set. The swing has weathered sea breezes and seasons. It has also gone through times of total abandonment when it seemed forgotten on the edge of the landscape.

The author gives us just enough text and illustrated detail to imagine who is sharing the swing at any given time. The faces are always facing away to the sea, drawing the viewer out and beyond as well. This is one of those beautiful books that could be the perfect gift for a milestone in the life of a family member or friend. (Penguin Random House)
