Roger Kramer was a peaceful, easy-going, humble man of quiet strength who enjoyed creating joy around him with his wit and playful pranks. One of his daughters described Roger’s life as a living embodiment of Philippians 2:3-4, which says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Roger, 82, died July 15.
Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Roger later graduated from Calvin College (now University) and Seminary in Grand Rapids, Mich., following in his father’s footsteps.
After ordination in 1968 he pastored Quincy (Wash.) Christian Reformed Church where he met and married Tammy Weaver in 1970. He then served Church of the Savior CRC in South Bend, Ind., and in 1981 began a 14-year call to Hope International CRC in Arcadia, Calif. He pastored Calvary CRC in Edina, Minn., until his retirement in 2005. Subsequently, Roger and his wife moved to Portland Ore., where he continued to serve as interim pastor at Parklane CRC and preached occasionally at Christ Community Church in Tualatin, Ore. He served as stated clerk of Classis Columbia for approximately a dozen years.
In their retirement, Roger and Tammy enjoyed seeing the world and traveling to many amazing places.
Married 56 years, Roger is survived by his wife, Tammy; four children and their spouses; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
