Rev. Martin Spoelstra was recently named the chaplain of his town’s fire department. Spoelstra is the pastor of Discovery Christian Reformed Church in Bowmanville, Ontario.
As a volunteer, Spoelstra will attend official functions such as medal ceremonies, provide spiritual care for firefighters when requested (including performing funerals, baptisms, and weddings) and act as liaison between the community and the fire department.
Spoelstra was invited to be the first person to fill this position by fire chief Gordon Weir. Spoelstra also has the support of other local pastors, who released him from his duty of being on call on weekends for hospital calls.
Spoelstra says he is excited about this new opportunity to serve the Lord in the community.
