When multi-instrumentalist Neal Morse discovered former Genesis drummer Chester Thompson backstage at a concert in Nashville last year, the two talked about getting together to jam and see if there might be something there. The session was such fun that they decided to invite veteran guitarist Phil Keaggy and bassist Byron House to join them. The jam sessions were recorded and formed the seeds of the first album by the quartet, who now call themselves Cosmic Cathedral.

Their musical compatibility gives the album, Deep Water, a tunefulness and musical complexity that is immediately evident. Two of the five tracks are long, with “The Heart of Life” over 13 minutes and the “Deep Water Suite” clocking in at over 38 minutes! But the music soars with catchy melodies and recurring hooks that keep the listener interested.

The shared faith of the four members means that even though this is a mainstream release, the lyrics are decidedly Christian, not only using metaphors (like daylight or deep water) that clearly point to the Christian life, but they also explicitly mention Jesus so that even casual listeners know what they’re singing about. Deep Water also showcases the instrumental chops of all four players. The lyrical guitar playing of Keaggy, and the light jazz-flavored touch of Thomson’s drums are just the tip of the iceberg of the wonderful musical moments on this album.
