Elzo Tenyenhuis will be remembered for his hospitality, willingness to help, ability to listen and connect, humor, curiosity, and integrity. He held a strong faith in Jesus and shared his zeal for the gospel whenever he had the opportunity. Through life's hardships Elzo chose hope and remained open to God's work in him. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April, Elzo faced the prognosis with courage, grace, and steadfast confidence in his heavenly Savior. “In these last months, Elzo showed us what a life fully surrendered to God could look like, and it was beautiful,” said his family. Elzo, 70, died in hospice on July 2.

Born in the Netherlands, the youngest of eight children, Elzo immigrated to Canada with his family at age 3, settling in Nova Scotia, where he developed a love of nature and the outdoors. After attending Calvin College (now University) for three years, Elzo studied at two universities in Ontario. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph and a Bachelor of Education from Brock University.

After a career in teaching, Elzo studied at Calvin Theological Seminary. After graduation and ordination in 1999 he pastored Kincardine (Ont.) CRC until 2007.

Elzo had an eclectic taste in music and was passionate about sharing songs and music with others. He had an inquiring mind and loved reading and exploring many different topics. He enjoyed engaging others in conversation.

Elzo is survived by Marijke, his wife of 47 years; two daughters and their spouses; and eight grandchildren.
