Valerie Holcomb and other members of San Diego (Calif.) Christian Reformed Church are reaching out to neighborhood children by offering after-school tutoring.

SuperKids is a neighborhood tutoring ministry designed to give kids a boost academically, socially, and emotionally.

“Our small team of tutors works one-on-one with each student with individualized instruction to match each student’s needs and learning style,” said Holcomb.

There are currently 10 volunteers for five students in grades two to seven. “They begin with a snack, do their homework, and end with one of the students reading a Bible story (to practice their reading),” said Holcomb.

Tutors take time to get to know the students and build a relationship. Now students look forward to each session and are excited to learn, said Holcomb.

Holcomb started the ministry when she saw many families struggling financially and academically. SuperKids uses social networking sites, Craig’s List, and flyers in stories and libraries to reach families interested in tutoring help.

“The parents have renewed interest in their child’s learning and the tutors help the parents manage their child’s homework time,” said Holcomb.

“Our goal is to help children in need make good life choices through positive mentoring relationships.”
