“The Lord’s Prayer” documentary discusses this well-known prayer, with various scholars weighing in on the different sections of the prayer Jesus gave to the disciples and recorded for all believers.
Part of the film’s synopsis states, “Through captivating visuals, exceptional scholarship, and powerful storytelling, this film helps viewers rediscover the prayer’s transformative power. It challenges us not merely to say the words, but to embody them—to shape our lives around trust, surrender, forgiveness, and the pursuit of God’s justice and peace.” Host Brad Gray, who has lived and studied in the Middle East and has also led study groups to Israel and Turkey, interviews scholars such as N.T. Wright, Jonathan Pennington, Michael Guillen, and Shively Smith on the context of the prayer. One interesting reminder is that the prayer’s concepts held much different meaning for Jews of Jesus’ day than Western people reading and reciting it.
The visuals in the production are stunning with beautiful scenery from Israel, Jordan, Egypt, United Kingdom, and Greece, plus paintings and drawings of Jesus’ ministry. This film requires serious concentration but rewards the viewer with a greater appreciation for the Lord’s Prayer. It offers a great companion to a Bible study or sermon series. (Rated PG.
