In her previous book, With Fresh Eyes: 60 Insights into the Miraculously Ordinary from a Woman Born Blind, author Karen Wingate shares her reflections on the amazing world she encountered after a life-changing eye surgery in 2016 that gave her better-than-ever vision.
As Wingate shared the excitement of her experiences with readers, she began to wonder if she had taken God’s gift of sound for granted since childhood because she had relied so heavily on that sense to navigate the world without sight. Wingate resolved to use the same approach she had used in her previous book to write about her discoveries of the wonder of sound.
Wingate explains her method: “I laced intentional listening into my day. I paused and paused some more. I leaned in to listen for what I could hear, to separate the layers of sounds that were too often camouflaged by my own noise. What else could I hear? How did the sound change? ... Why was it important for me to hear the undertones and the countermelodies of sound? And the core question I asked so many times as I discovered new aural horizons was this: What does this tell me about God my creator?”
Wingate relates her discoveries about the wonders of sound in this beautifully designed and biblically astute book. She offers readers a vulnerable window into her marriage, family life, church experiences, and, most importantly, her relationship with God. Readers will encounter Wingate’s humor, laments, pain, joy, and worshipful thoughts throughout these 60 reflections. Each begins with a Scripture verse and concludes with a prayer and a brief section titled “Listening with Open Ears,” in which readers are encouraged to answer compelling questions and to engage in activities that will heighten their experience of sound and enhance their wonder and worship of God the creator.
