When conflicts happen in communities, what can be done to restore peace? This children’s book tells how Cory the raccoon and his best friends try to restore peace in their village through the narrative power of storytelling.

It all started when Badger stole Fox’s bike, and the latter mobilized a group of animals to threaten Badger. Even though the bike was later returned, animals became hostile toward each other. Some started to give public speeches about animals with furs and feathers being better than others. Others started to single out members of the community as “invaders.” As observers of this cultural change, Cory and his friends are heartbroken because they believe every single member of the community should be respected and loved.

Before long, animals do not want to share good things with their neighbors anymore. All they want is to feel superior to others. Emotions of envy, anger, and hostility are running high in the village.

Cory and his best friend Owl realize that their village is in deep trouble. When they are pondering a solution, they meet a traveling horse who is also a wise poet with well-chosen words. The horse says to them: “Maybe you are the ones to change the story of your village.” Cory and Owl start to plan for a village feast with good food and, most importantly, a story they plan to tell publicly. Instead of the prevalent stories of power-seeking, hate-mongering, shaming, hiding, self-pity, and hoarding, they create a seventh story that does not turn neighbors against each other. This is the story of compassion, peace, and love.

Despite the mocking from many villagers who call this new story “silly,” Cory and his small circle of friends continue to keep the Seventh Story alive. They do so by sharing meals and laughter together. This small huddle of love continues to grow and draw more villagers in. The story lives on. (Convergent)
