Approximately 1,700 people attended the service at Vermeer Pavilion in Pella, Iowa.

The two denominations held their first official joint session to adopt a resolution since 1857.

The officers have a combined 20 years of synod experience, but only one has previously served on the executive.

The service marks the start of both the annual synod of the Christian Reformed Church and the general synod of the Reformed Church in America.
