Judy Lunshof is fascinated by the intricate wonders of creation she finds in ordinary, everyday things around her. This past fall, she felt God nudging her to use her eye for beauty to bring hope to the desperate famine situation in East Africa.

A retired teacher who has always loved nature, Lunshof recently took up photography and combined the new hobby with her love of card making. Taking her camera along on morning walks, she said she would see things that she had never seen before, causing her to be in awe of the wonder of God’s creation.

When Lunshof, a member of Smithville Christian Reformed Church, read about the plight of people in East African suffering from drought and famine this past summer, she asked God to help her think of a way to help.

“Immediately I thought of my cards,” she said, “and wondered if I could sell a few to raise some money.”

With the overwhelming support of her congregation and friends, Lunshof set up a sale table at her church and went door-to-door to her neighbors. Through her sales, she raised more than $1,000 to donate to the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee for famine response. A matching grant program through the Canadian government doubled her donation.

The response thrilled Lunshof, who said this has been a spiritual experience for her.

“It just shows that everybody can do something,” she said. “I enjoy what I do, and to see how God could use my love of his beautiful creation to help his people in need, it was just wonderful.”
