Celebrating A Year Of Faith Formation

by Gary Mulder

For generations God has produced a living faith in the hearts of believers. By the power of the Word and Spirit, God works through covenant communities that take seriously their calling to nurture faith in believers and their children.

To encourage a deeper commitment to this work, Synod 2005 called on Christian Reformed churches and classes to make faith formation a special focus beginning in the fall of 2007.

The Year of Faith Formation is a wonderful occasion to celebrate God’s faithfulness and for churches to rededicate themselves to helping members gain a deepening knowledge of God and his place in our lives.

To help congregations mark this special year, a packet of resources prepared by Faith Alive will soon be sent to each church. The packet will include information about the Year of Faith Formation and its theme, “Walk On,” as well as a DVD and many ideas for strengthening faith formation.

Although the celebration begins in September 2007, churches can begin thinking now about how they can make the Year of Faith Formation worthwhile for their members.

Laura Keeley, coordinator for the Year of Faith Formation and author of the resource book, notes that a life of faith is a journey—not something that takes place in an instant. “Knowing the Lord is the beginning of realizing that there is much more to our lives than just getting up each day and doing our daily routine,” she says. “Jesus also has a place in our daily lives.

“He wants us to know him better and better. He wants to walk with us as we travel on our life’s journey. The Year of Faith Formation will give churches an opportunity to help their members be better equipped for that journey.”
