Seattle Artist Wins National Contest
by
Heidi Wicker
Mandy Faber, 18, recently won the Congressional District Art Contest in her area. She resides in Seattle, Wash., where she is a member of First Christian Reformed Church. The nationwide art competition highlights and encourages high school artists. Faber’s piece was selected to hang in the tunnel connecting the U.S. House of Representatives to the Capitol building for a year. She was honored at a reception in June in Washington, D.C. Eileen Faber, Mandy’s mother, said, “The picture that she created is a collage about her great-grandmother, a charter member of the Christian Reformed church in Oak Harbor, the oldest CRC in Washington state.” Faber’s art teacher from Shoreline Christian High School, Diane Van Ornum, encouraged her to enter. “I was very surprised that I won, and I still am a little shocked right now,” said Faber. Faber’s future plans include attending Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, to major in art history or art education.
